Built on peninsula in the N.W. Corfu, Afionas offers view on both sides. tA village of 300 residents and thousands of visitors mainly the summer months which however has not been influenced a lot by the tourist constructions.A village with history which starts during the prehistoric years (ancient discoveries as axes and ancient currencies are found in the Archailogiko museum of Corfu (3000 B.C.)) is continued in the season of Omiros with his reports on Afionas and comes until the season of pirates where Afionas was the first outpost for the protection of Corfu (with fires from her and after from Aggelokastro and afterwards in the fortresses of Corfu). Famous excavators as Dorpfel and Parts passed also from Afiona ,some of their discoveries are in the Archaeological Museum of Corfu. In any case the big discovery that they were expecting to find here, the Palace of King Alkinoos finally was not found.
Walking in the old village we admire the architecture of an other time. It is believed that during the modern history the first inhabitants of the village were two shepherds from the village bardi of Argolida(today Amygdalitsa)400 years ago. They kept the name of their village for their one and so most of the citizens today have the same second name(Bardis). At the end of the old village we find 'loyloydi' a place with magic view on the west side of the island and the small 'Diapontia' Islands
.
One of the most important sites of Afionas is Afionas beach or porto limni. The region is completely virgin while is member of the program NATURA of E.U. as a place of Natural Beauty. We shouldn't of course forget the sunset from Afionas , the best in Corfu.
